Overrated is the fifth single release for the young, independent music artist TIA. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter has made some remarkable gains recently, including across-the-board play with her tracks, including features and adds on Triple J, Stingray Music & Mood Media In-Store Playlisting across multiple playlists, Teen Breathe Magazine, 4ZZZ, Southern Cross Austereo SEA 90.9 and NOVA Entertainment’s Coles Radio, to name a few. A Triple J Unearthed finalist, the rising indie-pop sensation has released another irresistible pop track. Yet, Overrated reveals a slight style shift that merges a more sophisticated approach while retaining all the melodic charm of previous songs. As TIA says about her latest release, ‘This song is about whether falling in love in your teenage years is worth the hype or if it is overrated. I wrote this to show the cycle that goes through our minds when you are always the single friend, and I hope other people can relate.’ Overrated is instantly identifiable, harnessing pop while imbuing it with a good measure of finesse; this is also due to the production, which blends inventive guitar work, intuitive programming and a polished sonic veneer to create a track that might transcend a strictly pop label. Although the theme is teenage love, the subject matter is arguably universal. As TIA says about what she hopes to achieve through her music, ‘I want people to feel that what they are going through is normal. I want my music and lyrics to be an escape for people.’ When TIA had the opportunity to tour with Tones & I in Tone’s backing choir recently, it cemented her belief that performing and writing songs was what she was meant to do. That confidence is evident on Overrated, not only in the maturity of the songwriting but in the self-assuredness of her commanding vocal performance.
