The Dalmatians – Millionaire ‘Single Review’

Tuesday April 19, 2022

The new release for emerging folk-rock band The Dalmatians has just been released; an exhilarating, upbeat track containing a sense of humour and some memorable melodic moments.

Comprised of Jonny and Wil, the band’s sound features compelling vocals, acoustic guitar, bouzouki, and keyboards. When asked about the new track, the band says, ‘Millionaire is a friendly poke at the mega-rich and their political buddies. We just don’t think these guys set the scene for us very well at all. Excess and power seem to be more intoxicating than ever.

The song sets this out very clearly, suggesting too much effort and motivation goes towards getting and staying rich and that this false value is infused into society generally.’ Millionaire is an organic sounding track that takes cues from a long list of Australian influences and inspirations, including The Church, Powderfinger, Paul Kelly, Crowded House, and Hunters & Collectors.

As the band says about their motivation, ‘We are inspired by a whole host of things. We are inspired by young people today who are way more tuned in to what is going on than in our day. We are inspired by suffering, gratitude, and hope. We are inspired by people who enjoy being funny. We are inspired by acts of love and peace.

We are inspired by Lily, the bands’ gentle black and white mascot.’ A live performance is an integral part of The Dalmatians’ experience, encompassing driving grooves, catchy licks, compelling storytelling, lush harmonies, and a feeling of energy and urgency that has been superbly transposed on Millionaire. As the band says about a recent career highlight, ‘Without a doubt, the highlight of our musical career as The Dalmatians has been to support Steve Kilbey (The Church) at the Belconnen Arts Centre in 2021.

Steve said some very positive things about our music after soundcheck, and he then set us up to come on stage for his finale, Under The Milky Way. Wil had the privilege of singing verse 2 and 4, and of course, everybody in the venue sang the chorus. The bouzouki fitted right in. It was a memorable night.’
