‘SLEEP DEPARTURE’
November 20, 2020
After a few weeks of recording in a studio-sized flat near the beach in Currarong NSW, Forces & Fury have a new EP on the horizon, and Sleep Departure is the first taste.
In September the pair escaped the city with their dog and cat to finish off a bunch of demos that had been written over the winter, and the product is something they speak proudly of; “we took the chilled vibe of the singles we released earlier this year and ramped up every part of our process – from the lyrics to the arrangement, performance, and recording techniques.
It felt really good to just go for it, and not overthink our decisions.” Sleep Departure combines smooth synths, lush layers of vocals, rich and sparkly guitar tones and a tight breakbeat, moving the song firmly into the electronica genre. Sparse sampled beats set a soft pulse from the start, and acoustic drums drop in after the first chorus with a dance beat that exaggerates the intensity of the lyrics that have just been sung: “Every day I remember that I’m going to die”.
The song builds in energy and emotion through to the last note, with the use of countless vocal layers and increasing spatial effects on the drums and guitars.

While the lyrical content of Sleep Departure focuses on the theme of death, the pair explain that it is actually a song they wrote to remind themselves to make the most out of every day “It’s been a strange year for everyone, and we’ve done a fair bit of soul searching and managing our mindset. The only inevitable thing in life is death, and we’ve found that if we remind ourselves of that regularly, it’s not a sad thing. It inspires us to live the way we want and to look at things in a positive light.”
Sleep Departure will be released on Friday November 20 with a music video coming in December.
