So Popera Productions, the pre-professional local company who brought you Singin’ in the Rain, Disney’s The Little Mermaid and the hit Broadway classic Chicago, is excited to bring Stephen Sondheim’s epic fairy tale musical to IPAC.
Into the Woods will take audiences on an imaginative, darkly comical journey through the tales of the Brothers Grimm. As they search for four critical items that will break a curse upon them, a baker and his wife meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfill a wish.
But, be careful what you wish for…
A strong local cast and orchestra will breathe life into the complex Sondheim score, noted for it rich vocal phrasing.
The beautiful and mysterious world that audiences might recognise from the 2014 film (starring Meryl Streep & James Corden) will come alive with a fully automated 10.8m revolving stage and massively detailed set pieces, some as tall as 7 metres.
So Popera Productions is a Wollongong based not-for-profit company with a mission to bridge the gap between community theatre and professional theatre in the Illawarra region. The company was founded in 2008 and continues to be managed by University of Wollongong graduates, all of whom have professional training in the entertainment industry.
