Despite growing up in an emotionally turbulent environment where chasing one’s dreams of making music was strongly discouraged, Sludgeface (Zak Ryzard) always had an undying passion for creating art for people to enjoy.
Zak explains, “My inspirations have always been diverse. One minute, I’m idolising hip-hop producers and the way they’ve structured a beat, the next, I’m infatuated with a Frank Zappa guitar solo or Beach Boys vocal harmony. Hip-hop music really seemed to be my calling as an artist, so as I tried over and over again to make songs like my idols, I was simultaneously building my own skills and creating my own sound.“
Zak’s new album, ‘SWEET’, is an entirely self-produced palette of colourful beats that he uses to take the listener through topics such as ‘getting a bag’ or Kobe Bryant or the effect that negative childhood experiences can have on your life. “In these crazy times, I think we all could use something sweet.”
