SEXXXY BEAST – ‘JUST DO YOUR MAGIC’ REVIEW

Just Do Your Magic is the debut release for Australian music artist Sexxxy Beast. If the artist’s name provokes a muted giggle, the track might also.

After spending the past ten years as an actor and DJ, Sexxxy Beast discovered his love for singing and dance music. His new path became an ambition to bring the dance sounds of the past into the present. After working with producers David Manna and Dave Longo (Samantha Jade, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ella Hooper) on other music projects, Sexxxy Beast appears to have fulfilled some of his ambition, at least in part.

The track is fundamentally an interpretation of a physical work-out for the dancefloor. And Sexxy Beast’s video also helps fulfil some of this ambition, with its literal representations—bodies working out, boxing, etc. Of course, the connection between the dancefloor and the gym as seen in a music video has been well established, with such ‘classics’ as Call On Me (Eric Prydz), Hung Up (Madonna), and of course, Olivia Newton John’s Physical.

Sexxy Beast does change it up a little with the inclusion of a scantily clad wolf figure, intercut with two featured dancers’ scenes. However, the track’s most appealing aspect is the lyric. Although set to quite a neutral dance soundtrack—all the usual suspects are here, the drops, the perpetual bass drum, the synth riffs and accompanying textural bells and whistles—the concept does manage to give the track an impetus and energy that might otherwise get lost in the sonic swirl.

With lines like Just do your lifts and suck your abs/Just do your splits and twerk that ass/Just do your boulders and then your traps, it’s easy to understand how Just Do Your Magicmight attract a broad demographic—from teens to mid-lifers, clinging to any kind of inspirational, motivational aide.

The production is fittingly clean with Sexxy Beast’s vocal performance also notably appropriate and for the most part persuasive, perhaps most persuasive during one of the hooks, with the ingratiating motif You’re awesome, the kind of motif the track’s target audience will undoubtedly enjoy repeating.
