Australian pop’s promising new luminary, singer-songwriter Rachael Coltrona, has launched her first single, Complicated, a release poised to make her musical aspirations a reality.
As Rachael articulated, her music aims to foster a profound connection with listeners, inviting them to experience a gamut of emotions from laughter to tears, to engage in dreams, or even to dance. She desires her music to do more than merely fill silence; she envisions it as an auditory magnet, drawing in listeners with its captivating sound, catchy lyrics, or relatable narrative, if only for a fleeting moment.
Complicated presents an irresistible fusion of contemporary pop and dance-funk rhythms, its lyrics navigating the intricate labyrinth of relationships and communication breakdowns. This track is an exhibition of Coltrona’s remarkable vocal range and depth. A 2017 WAAPA graduate and a former musical theatre performer, Rachael has seamlessly transitioned into the pop music realm, carrying forward her refined theatrical abilities.
Her memorable performances include a stunning display in HAMA’s rendition of Legally Blonde at the prestigious Crown in 2021 and her heavenly soprano vocals enchanting audiences at Joondalup Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas Carol events. In Complicated, Coltrona intertwines funk-influenced beats with a splash of 80s pop nostalgia, her rich, intimate vocals commanding the spotlight. The lyrics explore the complexities of a ‘situationship’ (an undefined romantic or sexual relationship) inspired by Rachael’s experience with an indecisive individual.
She shares, ‘The inspiration came from personal experience with someone who was flirting with the idea of keeping me around while not really committing to anything. Kind of going nowhere fast but not wanting to accept it. Relationships are complicated after all!’ Following her critically acclaimed rendition of John Madara and David White’s You Don’t Own Me in late 2022, Coltrona is now on the cusp of an exhilarating chapter in her career, propelled by the dynamic pop energy of Complicated.
