DULCIE

Dulcie is a band you need to see live to really appreciate what makes them so special. For one, they’re really young, so when they’re performing their indie-pop tunes, it’s clear they exhibit musicianship that is well beyond their years. What’s more, is that they gel incredibly well together, which allows them to present well-polished tracks.

There’s some funk, rock and jazz elements sprinkled throughout their set to keep everyone interested. Dulcie are a band you should listen to now so that you can brag about knowing them once they inevitably blow up.

Approachable Members of Your Local Community

From the first groovy bass line it was clear we were in for a good time when Approachable Members of Your Local Community began. Decked-out in all-pink, all-Adidas gear, the four-piece lived up to their name and then some, with a whole lot of hilarious conversational humour, mixed with upbeat tunes.

The band had a talent for taking random conversations with punters and coming up with irreverent comedy gold. This, plus their feel-good, danceable music made the Melbourne group an absolute delight to behold – anybody who catches their set is in for a treat.

Polish Club

Above everything else, Polish Club’s rock-heavy set informed me how incredibly affective prop-based comedy can be in uniting a crowd. Drummer, John-Henry Pajak, spent $100 to rent a gong cymbal so that he could tape ‘Wollon’ on the front. In other words, he spent $100 on a pun. This one idea went over well with the audience, with one chosen crowd member finally getting to hit the gong at the end of the show, an event that punters were frothing for ever since the gong’s reveal.

The music itself was massively impactful. New and old songs were equally affective in ungluing punters’ feet from the floor and get them moving. It was hard-hitting and riff-heavy, boosted even more by having an additional band member playing bass to help realise the duo’s ambitious sound.

David Novak’s band leader persona oozed with machismo and charisma as he swaggered about on stage in all-white clothes. Novak and Pajak played off each other’s banter smoothly, which occasionally led to a spontaneous cover song, much to the crowd’s delight.

Passionate calls for an encore led to a genuinely unexpected extra song being played before punters dispersed.

Polish Club went beyond power chords and power stances to put on a unique show that resonated with their audience in a fun and meaningful way.
