The new single for Australian dance-pop artist Lark is only a slight stylistic departure for the singer-songwriter. Unicorn features a more mainstream pop sensibility yet retains the artist’s penchant for including zippy word puns in her lyrics and delivering them with ease and self-assuredness.
Following on from her previous singles We Love Us! and Hit The Record, Lark’s return heralds in a new phase for the musician; it’s still pop, but it’s the kind of pop that aims for a broader segment of the song-streaming public, creating a track that’s at home on a dancefloor, a car stereo or a wedding. The new single combines an infectious beat, focused hooks, and Lark’s distinctive emotive vocal.
With a rapidly growing fanbase and extensive experience performing in venues from dive bars to the iconic Rainbow Room on Sunset Strip, Lark is sure to attract radio and streaming attentionwith Unicorn.
The song is a tribute to the invaluable relationships in her life, inspired by her closest companions, her daughter and her significant other. Written in just a three-hour whirlwind of inspiration and brought to life by former Australian Independent Producer of the Year (2013) Jono Fernandez, the buoyant intro that opens Unicorn sets up the track wonderfully. Lark has employed a typical band-like structure for this new one and harnessed quite a traditional classic pop sound, blending it with a contemporary approach.
The chorus is highlighted by a massive hook, and further enhanced by vocal harmonies, chants and, of course, a sharp lyric. Unicorn is playful, positive and life-affirming and anotable addition to Lark’s list of releases. Lark has performed extensively and has been working in the music industry for nearly 30 years. She is now sharing her knowledge and experience in a series of mentoring videos to assist aspiring musicians in achieving success in their musical careers.
