Emerging Australian singer-songwriter Langside has just dropped her new track, Cold. The new song builds on the themes explored on her debut album If It’s All the Same to You (2021). As Langside says about the personal anguish behind her latest work, ‘I got married at the sweet young age of nineteen.
Just over seven years later, my husband dropped a series of self-realisation bombs on our relationship, and I found myself making the decision to end my marriage.’ Coldis a smooth yet refined summary of the aftereffects of a breakdown, featuring a direct and accessible lyric, and yet it’s also a showcase for Langside’s vocal performance.
Langside’s voice is the main focus here, drawing on a myriad of musical influences, a stylish, dreamy, and hypnotic blend that infuses the lyric and the melodies with a striking, earthy, elegant charm.
The instrumentation is sparse and free flowing, supporting Langside’s every nuance and application of subtle dynamics. As Langside says about the track’s inspiration, ‘Cold is the story of the end of the road for my marriage, showcasing the idealisation I held on to for far too long and too stubbornly, realising I was in a marriage that was rarely bright and often sombre.’
The new release will help confirm Langside’s artistic presence, as will her live performances; as Langside says about a recent career first, ‘I recently had the opportunity to support Casey Donovan for her Bluesday on Tour show as a part of the Great Southern Nights initiative. To play a 500-capacity theatre to a brand-new audience who had never heard of me, just one week after playing my debut show as Langside to an audience of friends and family, was very special.
The audiences were so different, but it was an honour to connect with people who know me and those who don’t. And really, that’s all I want to do, connect with people through my music. Cold is not only an eloquent musical rendering of dissolution but a familiar one, which will undoubtedly connect with audiences across the board.
