John Reilly – ‘Shapeshifters’ Single Review

Tuesday June 18, 2024

John Reilly’s new single, Shapeshifters, is an evocative blend of mythic storytelling and personal reflection, wrapped in an anthemic rock sound. Inspired by Navajo folklore, Reilly uses the tales of Skinwalkers and Shapeshifters to explore themes of transformation and courage, creating a track that feels both ancient and immediate.

Reilly’s musical journey began in Liverpool and found fertile ground in Sheffield, where he became a beloved figure. His early success with Boy on a Dolphin in the US and Canada laid the groundwork for a solo career marked by critically acclaimed albums like Tea Cozy Hat, Zebulon, and Bad Vibe Shredder. His involvement in the Women of Steel project, which raised £170,000, showcased his commitment to impactful artistry and earned him the backing of BBC Radio.

Shapeshifters opens with an intimate voice and piano rendition of the song’s chorus, setting a reflective tone that draws the listener in. This stripped-down introduction soon gives way to a full-band arrangement, unveiling an organic and soulful sound led by the piano. The transition is seamless, and the addition of the band brings a richer texture to the track.

Following this initial build, an interlude leads us into another verse, where the melody is beautifully echoed by the piano. This section features moving chord changes that add depth and emotional resonance to the song. As the song progresses, another chorus is introduced, mirroring the ascending lyrical themes of transformation and growth. A chant emerges after this chorus, adding a layer of communal energy to the track. This is followed by a vocal interlude that serves as a bridge, building anticipation for the final chorus.

The song culminates in an anthemic resolve, showcasing John Reilly’s heartfelt vocal approach and leaving listeners with a powerful, uplifting conclusion. Set to feature on Reilly’s upcoming album, Manta Ray, Shapeshifters will be released in November 2024, alongside a UK and European tour with his long-time collaborator Lewis Nitikman. The album promises to continue Reilly’s tradition of blending profound lyrics with compelling musical arrangements. John Reilly’s Shapeshifters is a masterful example of how music can transcend the ordinary and touch on the timeless.
