Australian singer-songwriter Holly Wild has just released her second single, No Limits. A natural progression from her debut track, Love Chooses You, released earlier in the year, No Limits is an indie-pop delight, utilising Holly’s evocative vocal, unforgettable melodies, and balanced instrumentation to create a striking and bold statement of self-assertion.
As Holly says about the inspiration behind No Limits, ‘The song was written one sunny afternoon after getting home from a workshop my friend was hosting that invited us to delve deep into our subconscious mind. I went into a ‘trance like’ state during the workshop, and after a day of exploration, I’d apparently ‘shed’ a whole lot of limiting beliefs that I had of myself… beliefs that I’d collected over the course of a lifetime.
Some of these were helpful, but many were not helpful. I came home deeply relaxed with a sense of optimism. I realised that if we had the ability to delve into our past and shed all the preconceived ideas we had of ourselves, ideas that might be holding us back, our potential could be endless.’ The track sidesteps any formal intro, beginning with an intimacy that underpins the song’s focus, vocal and acoustic guitar generating a restrained mood until a fully armed chorus hook arrives.
The production is smooth and clean without forgoing any sense of urgency or energy, utilising vocal layers, textural effects, dynamics, and ambient touches to create a rich, indie-pop experience. With a style reminiscent of Maggie Rogers and Holly Humberstone, No Limits accesses contemporary pop elements as well as a few more surprising touches; a driving chorus pulse imbues the lyric with a palpable sense of emotional authenticity.
When asked what inspires her, Holly says, ‘I guess you could say this inspiration comes from my close friends and family and how complex human interactions/emotions can make me feel.’ Taken from her forthcoming EP, No Limits is undoubtedly the track that will take Holly Wild to the next level.
