‘Live At The Drive In’ it was dubbed. Hockey Dad had a new album to unveil, and it was burning a hole in their back pocket. Restricted by you know what, the band had to get creative. And that’s just what they did. What a better way to launch ‘Brain Candy’, the bands #2 ARIA debut 3rd full length release, than a Drive-In show in their hometown of Wollongong at The Bulli Showgrounds.
With a slight hiccup due to weather the now legendary shows took place almost a year ago to the day, on 9 and 10 October 2020. Any carload of fans who were able to wrangle a ticket were treated to a show like no other. With the sound from the stage beaming in via their FM cars stereos, horns replacing moshing and hazard lights for applause, the ‘Live At The Drive In’ shows were a huge success and gave fans a suitable “I was there” moment for the launch of ‘Brain Candy’.
For fans who weren’t lucky enough to be able to get to the shows are now treated to the awesome news is that these live sets will be released in all its glory. Hockey Dad ‘Live At The Drive In’ will be released on 22 October. Fans can pre-save or pre-order vinyl now.
Hockey Dad said: “The drive-in shows were such a strange and exciting experience for us. The idea was so foreign, and we had no idea how it was actually going to play out. The atmosphere was unlike any other show we’ve ever played. We wanted to record and release the show as a little memento from a very weird time in the entertainment industry where conventional gigs are out the window. Hopefully it brings back fond memories if you attended any of the gigs. If it’s your first listen, we hope you enjoy the show and we are sure you’ll love the horns.”
Featuring 13 tracks including ‘I Missed Out’, ‘Itch’ and more from ‘Brain Candy’ as well as classics ‘Join The Club’, ‘Seaweed’, ‘Sweet Release’ and more, ‘Live At The Drive In’ marks an incredible moment for Hockey Dad. At a time when the world was closed off to live music, Hockey Dad managed to pull off two of the most memorable gigs that will be talked about for years to come.
