Supporting Teenage Joans on their EP tour in October.

Jervis Bay duo Debbies unveil their new video for their ‘Sinner’. The new track illustrates why this young Aussie surf punk band have in 2 short years already achieved so much – winning the Yours and Owls Festival (2019), Triple j Unearthed High Finalists (2019) as well as performing at Falls Festival and Bigsound. Sinner has been added to Triple j Unearthed with spins on Triple j including on Home and Hosed with Declan Byrne and added to Spotify’s Local Noise and Fresh Finds AU/NZ playlist.
Watch ‘Sinner’
When writing the single, Debbies wanted to capture a more ‘word-painting’ esque vibe by incorporating the river scenery throughout the verses which stemmed from a real experience of when they went to a party a few years ago.
The video for ‘Sinner’ was filmed on the Shoalhaven River at Grady’s River Retreat, a place the band had grown up around. It was directed by Dane Singleton and edited by Tas Wilson from Ruby Fields.
“Looking back on it now, the way the Sinner music video came about was really just a series of fortunate events of meeting the right people and bringing the ideas we had to life. It all started before we even recorded the song when we went to the Gerringong Winter Wine Festival to watch friends Teenage Joans, and happened to bump into Tas Wilson from Ruby Fields.
We got talking and before we knew it, basically planned an entire music video for Sinner which he had never heard. Fast forward a bit from then and COVID spiked up again which made it near impossible for Tas to shoot the clip, so we managed to tee up our mate Dane Singleton from down south to film the music vid, all while keeping Tas involved in doing the edit which we were stoked about considering the ideas we created for the clip. The location we chose for the clip was Grady’s River Retreat on the Shoalhaven River which we had grown up around as our local so it felt right for us to go no further.
We really wanted to play on the idea of hell being some really bad day on repeat for eternity, except we just had a massive night on the river and woke up, kept drinking and the same stuff happened again haha. We wanted to capture the clip completely on handycam and digital footage so we could have the opportunity to alter between both in the clip, which we believe ended up being one of the more effective highlights of the clip.”

‘Sinner’ is the follow up to Triple j favourites ‘Money’, ‘Influencer’ and ‘Waking Up In L.A.’ The track came together at Defwolf Studios Sydney with mixing and mastering by George Georgiadis. “In the studio we wanted to really make the bridge a special moment in the song so we played around with different synths and ways of layering drums and vocals that we had never done before. The result felt like some dreamy vocal layered questioning of “is it hard to be like somebody else” that snaps out into an answer in the last pre chorus.”
