EGOISM SHARES NEW TRACK + VIDEO ‘2016-2018’

+ ANNOUNCES LOCAL SUPPORTS FOR TOUR STARTING NEXT WEEK INCLUDING LA LA LAS WOLLONGONG

May 02, 2022

Following the release of their addictive track For Ages last month, EGOISM deliver the intimate new single 2016-2018. This song arrives ahead of their For Ages Tour, which hits the east coast, starting next weekend in Brisbane.

2016-2018 is a tender offering from the Sydney based indie-pop duo, made up of Olive Rush (they/them) and Scout Eastment (she/her), that explores the emotions of feeling helpless. Contrasting lyrical weight with a light production led by an acoustic guitar, their strong harmonies echo a reassuring warmth to the listener.

“I’m convinced that your capacity for fear peaks at 18. I was completely directionless and trying to find who ‘my people’ were. I made a close friend, and over 2 years I watched their life descend into total chaos as I was helpless to do anything. Mainly because I was circling the same drain. So I wrote this song to say what I wish I could have said back then. Writing it kind of made me realise how little power I had over what happened. In some ways it’s closure” Olive says of the track.

For the accompanying video, they have teamed up with Billy Zammit again who directed their For Ages music video. Continuing the neon aesthetic from their previous video, there is a sense of nostalgia that filters through the cinematic flair.

“We wanted to make sure that the video for 2016/2018 was something simple, where it’s clear that it’s Olive and I singing to someone we used to know. It was filmed on the same day as the video for For Ages – in my friends sharehouse just down the street from the For Ages fruit shop. I was so nervous when Billy and the crew had to climb onto the roof of my friends Redfern terrace in order to cover up the skylight, since we didn’t have time to film at night. My friend Molly had her acting debut as the subject of the song and i think she looks beautiful” Scout said.

The double A side release of For Ages / 2016-2018 shows the two sides of the band. For Ages last month marked the first new music since their 2021 single Lonely But Not Alone. With a breezy guitar riff and light pop beats filtering through the production, the song highlights the importance of open conversations on mental health while capturing a hopeful outlook.

EGOISM will hit the road for a run of headline shows this May and June with Montgomery and local special guests Teddie in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, SAIK in Brisbane, with Melbourne to be announced soon. Kicking off in Brisbane on Saturday 7 May, the five date run will see them showcasing new music to audiences, as well as highlighting all of the previously released fan favourites.

Pegged as ones-to-watch, EGOISM have won acclaim from industry tastemakers. In 2019 they toured with Pinkish Blu, played BIGSOUND, were nominated for both Song of the Year and Next Big Thing in the FBi SMAC awards, and became triple j Unearthed’s 11th most played artist of the year. In 2020, the band released their debut EP On Our Minds and were announced as one of 16 recipients of Unearthed’s Level Up COVID Grants, and reached #11 in the community radio charts. And in 2021 they released Lonely But Not Alone and supported Odette on her national tour, which leads them into a very exciting 2022 with the release of For Ages and their forthcoming headlining tour only marking the beginning.
