“Superstar” (Groupie) featuring Little Quirks
February 28, 2022
The Soul Movers’ sparkling new single, Superstar (Groupie) features Murray Cook on not only acoustic guitar, but mandolin, electric, and bass guitar…
A Hot Potato Studio production, with Wiggles engineer, Alex Keller, with Don Bartley mastering, have worked together to create a version of The Carpenters mega-hit “Superstar” that conjures the glamour and satin of the seventies but also brings in an earthy depth with acoustic strings and sumptuous harmonies…
Washing over listeners like a luscious summer wave, the Little Quirks’ blood-harmonies soothe and linger, supporting Lizzie Mack’s centered vocal – a more calm and potent voice than we have heard from this Soul Mover in some time. Luke Herbert – who played on the very same kit drummer Hal Blaine used on “Superstar” during his many years in the US – unites the combination of earth and air, expansion and limitation – the version turning out to be much more than what The Soul Movers could have imagined.
“OG Red Wiggle, Murray Cook, actually now prefers it to The Carpenters version – and that’s something we never thought possible – having loved it so much and for so long.”
– Lizzie Mack (The Soul Movers).
“I feel like our Superstar (Groupie) cover combines our love of retro sound. It stretches over the three generations of music makers involved in making it – all equally passionate about the sounds of the 1970s, aesthetics and the ultra-sheik vibes of an era that really, knew no bounds.”
– Murray Cook (The Soul Movers/ OG Wiggles)

Extra Insider…
The Superstar music clip shoot happened to be the very same day the “Triple J Hottest 100” winner was announced. Cast and crew witnessed the media-frenzy as Wiggles HQ was bombarded by everyone from The Project to the nightly news team. Anthony was upstairs reading the newspaper in his blue skivvy, Lachy was strolling the halls in purple and Murray was in and out of his red skivvy any time there was a break in the shoot to hop on camera and do a live interview – the OG’s taking it all in their very calm and experienced stride!
Some of that fun and “winning excitement’ definitely made it into the dance scene on the Superstar video. Murray is well and truly back in the saddle at the “OG Red Wiggle” these days – being two shows into the current national tour. Having 20-somethings bouncing around with Wiggly joy and love is just another day!
As the track now includes its original (1969 Barnett/ Russell) (Groupie) title, we got talking fans and groupies with Murray. The Wiggles certainly had theirs! The lads had some near misses with overly enthusiastic (and often childless) fans who followed The Wiggles clear across the USA with adoring gestures. The Soul Movers share many laughs on long drives to their live shows with “Muz” letting the odd inside story slip – including the false names The Wiggles, Greg, Jeff and Anthony had to use during the BIG years of the 1990s checking into hotels as they zig-zagged the “big red juggernaut” (three massive touring busses) across America.
Superstar exudes a message of energy and life and excitement, wedged between verses that almost flatline with their coolness and control. For women – as performers in and around the fringes of music industry – the song holds such familiar feelings of passion and longing, joy and the following downside slump after an amazing, transportative experience that takes you out of everyday life… it’s the thing we life our mundane lives to get to – to be those shooting stars… even if just for the length of a few choruses…
