JOE MUNGOVAN releases uplifting new single ‘Like That’

Debut album ‘A FLOWER IN THE WEEDS’ out Wednesday, 10th November.

Touring throughout October, November and December.

October 28, 2021

NSW South Coast singer-songwriter Joe Mungovan returns today with his fresh Summery tune ‘Like That’. It follows on from singles ‘You + Me’, ‘Lemon + Lime’, ‘Soaking Up The Sunshine’ and ‘Give Me Your Love’ which all feature on his long awaited debut album ‘A Flower In The Weeds’.

Produced by Joe Mungovan at a picturesque studio in Kangaroo Valley, ‘Like That’ stays true to Joe’s indie rock roots but is still laden with infectious pop vibes and melodies. The new single and debut album were mixed by ARIA Award winning producer/engineer Tim Carr(Matt Corby, Julia Stone) and mastered by long term collaborator Joe Carra (Courtney Barnett, The Teskey Brothers).

“Like That’ is about a road-trip I went on before Covid hit. A girl I had met in Germany flew to Australia to see me and we travelled up and down the coast in my van. We were out in the bush for a week and came back into reception to the news that the German borders were closing. We fanged it back to Sydney Airport to get her on a flight home in time.” Joe Mungovan

Throughout his career, Joe Mungovan has consistently constructed melodies that expand from traditional pop and rock songwriting structures. His songs have been played across Triple j, Double j and community radio, video support across Rage and MTV and press praise in Rolling Stone, Pilerats, Music Feeds, Au Review, The Music to name a few. Mungovan’s songwriting has also seen him nominated for an APRA Award and Golden Guitar Award in 2021, and a Finalist in the International Songwriting Competition in 2020.

In what could be one of the funniest videos this year, Mungovan channels his inner actor creating different personalities that rival videos by Polish Club, Dune Rats or DZ Deathrays.

“This is by far the most ridiculous music video I have ever made.  I came up with the idea randomly one day and took it to Mikey and Christina and we kind of just rolled with it.  The process of making this record was solitary as I recorded most of the songs while living by myself.  We played with the idea of ‘Joe Mungovan’ as a 4-piece band and the personalities each ‘band member’ would embody. The idea’s got more and more outrageous as we went on.  There was glitter, hair wire, make up and at one stage my eyelids were accidentally glued together.  It was filmed at the house I grew up in.”

Joe’s debut album ‘A Flower In The Weeds’ was inspired by the time he spent traveling through Europe and Australia with a girl he met in Berlin, drinking wine and enjoying life before his plans were turned upside down because of the Covid pandemic. The album was written during the 2020/ 2021 lockdown and recorded during the now infamous South Coast December bushfires with Mungovan further explaining, “I recorded the majority of the album in Kangaroo Valley.

I moved out to the bush and turned a small house into my studio.  I would go weeks without seeing any other humans. However I woke up one morning and could barely breathe as the smoke was so thick from the bushfires. I evacuated for a week and fortunately the fires just missed the house. I moved back down and then the valley flooded. I lost power for 5 days and lived by candlelight. The house provided me with the time and space to reflect on the past years of touring and life. My mate Tim Carr helped me put the final touches on the songs and we mixed the album in his bedroom closet.”

To celebrate the release of his debut album, Joe will be performing with his full band in October and doing a special run of acoustic shows ‘Breakfast With Joe’ in November and December.

“ I initially planned on touring the album with a full band through November and December. The second lock down hit, I quickly realised that I would have to reschedule those shows, but I still wanted to play some gigs and give people live music. The idea of ‘Breakfast With Joe’ was born. On the week the album drops I will hit the road and travel up the east coast playing at a different cafe each morning. I have chosen some beautiful spaces with big outdoor areas so bring your picnic rug, get your almond latte orders in and enjoy a morning of live music and smashed avo.” Joe Mungovan
